If you've ever put off strength training because you didn't know where to begin, the latest guidance from the American College of Sports Medicine has reassuring news.
You don't need the perfect workout.
You don't need fancy equipment. You don't need to spend hours at the gym. And you don't have to chase the latest fitness trend on social media.
What matters most is something much simpler: showing up consistently.
We couldn’t agree more.
The ACSM recently released its first major update to strength-training recommendations in 17 years after reviewing 137 scientific studies involving more than 30,000 participants. The message was clear: You can get stronger and healthier through a variety of approaches, as long as you stay active over time.
As the authors put it, "The best resistance training program is the one you'll actually stick with."
That's encouraging news for anyone who's been waiting until life slows down or trying to find the "perfect" workout before getting started.
The guidelines found that resistance bands, machines, free weights and body-weight exercises can all improve strength and physical function. The common denominator isn't the equipment. It's consistency.
Or, as the ACSM authors write, "Whether it's barbells, bands, or bodyweight, consistency and effort drive results."
Some people won’t start exercising because they think it has to be all or nothing. If they miss a week, they feel like they’ve failed and quit altogether.
But real-life fitness after 50 doesn't work that way.
When Daily Life Gets Easier
The new recommendations also reinforce another piece of good news: You don't have to spend every day in the gym. For most healthy adults, two strength-training sessions each week bring improvements in strength, balance, mobility and everyday function.
In other words, it gets easier to lift babies, carry groceries, and get up off the floor! For starters.
Start with something you enjoy. Gradually make it a little more challenging. Enjoy yourself. Simple!
Progress doesn't have to happen all at once.
In fact, consistency almost always beats intensity over the long run.
Like Any Good Habit
Think about brushing your teeth. The benefit doesn't come from one marathon brushing session. It comes from doing it today, then tomorrow, then the day after that.
Exercise works the same way.
On any given day, it may not seem like much has changed. But over weeks and months, those small efforts add up to stronger muscles, healthier bones, better balance, more energy and greater confidence.
The latest recommendations confirm: You don't have to be “perfect” to be healthier and happier.
You just have to keep showing up.
